How to make the most of 2027’s bank holidays

Choose one option for each bank holiday, then search for a trip on those dates. These are separate ideas, not a whole-year plan. They use up to five days of annual leave and assume you work Monday to Friday in England and Wales.

To plan the whole year at once, with your own allowance and region, use the annual leave planner. It works out the best days to book for Scotland and Northern Ireland too.

Questions about 2027 bank holidays

How many bank holidays are there in 2027?

England and Wales have 8, Scotland has 9 and Northern Ireland has 10. Scotland adds 2nd January and St Andrew’s Day but has no Easter Monday. Northern Ireland adds St Patrick’s Day and Battle of the Boyne.

What is a substitute day?

When a bank holiday falls on a weekend, a weekday becomes a bank holiday instead, normally the following Monday (GOV.UK). In 2027 that happens 2 times in England and Wales: Christmas Day on Monday 27 December and Boxing Day on Tuesday 28 December.

Why are 27 and 28 December 2027 bank holidays?

Christmas Day and Boxing Day fall on a Saturday and Sunday in 2027. The Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 moves Boxing Day to Monday 27 December (legislation.gov.uk), and a royal proclamation makes Tuesday 28 December a bank holiday in place of Christmas Day (Privy Council proclamation, July 2026). Book 29 to 31 December and you get ten days off in a row.

Is Boxing Day a bank holiday?

Yes, in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. In 2027 Boxing Day falls on a Sunday, so the bank holiday moves to Tuesday 28 December. When it falls on a weekend, the replacement weekday is set by the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 (legislation.gov.uk) or by royal proclamation, and GOV.UK lists it.

Is Easter Monday a bank holiday in Scotland?

No. In Scotland the Easter bank holiday is Good Friday only. Easter Monday is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971). When is Easter?

When is the August bank holiday in Scotland?

Scotland’s summer bank holiday is the first Monday in August, Monday 2 August in 2027. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland it’s the last Monday, Monday 30 August.

Does my employer have to give me bank holidays off?

No. Your employer doesn’t have to give you paid leave on bank holidays (GOV.UK). Many do, and your contract says which applies to you.

Do bank holidays count towards my 28 days’ leave?

They can. Full-time workers are entitled to at least 5.6 weeks’ paid holiday a year, which is 28 days for a five-day week, and employers can choose to include bank holidays in it (GOV.UK, Acas). Many office jobs give 25 days plus bank holidays instead. Our planner asks for your whole allowance, bank holidays included, so it works either way.

I work part-time. Do I get bank holidays?

Part-time workers get holiday pro rata. If a bank holiday falls on a day you don’t work, your employer can’t make you use leave for it (Acas).

Can bank holiday dates change?

Yes. Most dates are set by the 1971 Act, but the King can add or move bank holidays by proclamation, as happened for coronations and jubilees. We check GOV.UK’s list every week.
